IF publicity is the key to politics, the Greens have hit the mark in their Illawarra candidates for the federal election.
Former MP Michael Organ will once again stand for Cunningham while Shellharbour community activist Peter Moran will take up the fight in Throsby. Both have been in the news for much of their political careers.Mr Organ, 50, pulled off a stunning upset in the 2002 Cunningham by-election when he beat Labor candidate Sharon Bird. The result was reversed in 2004 but the University of Wollongong archivist said he was confident of his third tilt for the seat, in which the Green vote has gradually grown in federal and state elections."I think there's a real feeling in the community that we've got to get rid of John Howard and the electorate wants a change but they don't want Labor," he said.Mr Moran, 48, has also had his share of headlines. The Oak Flats tour bus driver was initially in a Shellharbour City Council court action over a website that allegedly leaked sensitive information.Mr Moran, the website moderator, was later dropped from the action and is seeking costs. The former Labor state conference delegate quit the party 25 years ago in disgust at factionalism. He wants to encourage votes for the Greens to enable the Senate to fulfil its role of review.
